You Only Live Once

Updated: Jan 28, 2020

The time where I made a big life decision over margaritas and now I am back in the same place 15 years later.

September 2004:

That time Ronni, and Bishal, both convinced me to move to LA over a couple of margaritas.  I remember the exact moment and location, I finally said yes because she had been asking me for a while!  I was living in Houston since I was 5 or 6 years old with a stint in Austin during college, so it was time to break out of my comfort zone and go on an adventure.  The timing was right, I was in a transition in life from getting out of a long serious relationship, my job was meh, and I really need a change of scenery.

I won't lie, it was a very hard decision to move. I had a lot of anxiety and often wanted to change my mind.  I had also met someone that I had been dating for several months before this decision and you know how that goes.

October 2004:  One and a half months later, I packed up and moved to LA with no job. Thankfully a good friend, Austin, who worked at a brokerage firm there got me an interview. I was hired and the job was a great fit for me.

In the end, I did what was best for ME, which I NEVER did before. I was homesick for at least a year as I had left a piece of my heart in Texas missing my friends, family, and that someone. This adventure helped me break out of my shell, find a little bit of myself, and it was one of the best decisions of my life.  This event changed me for the better and I’ll forever be indebted to Ronni for taking me along her adventure. I lived in LA for a little over 2 years and moved back to Austin, where I met my husband.  We have had a few moving adventures together and found ourselves back in LA.

October 2019:  Here we are today, 15 years later, Ronni never left and the gang is back together.  She ended up marrying my college friend, Michael, who moved us in our first LA apartment, and they have two gorgeous girls.  I also made life long friends in my first LA experience and so glad to be close to them again.

Takeaway:  If you have a chance, move away from your home base even if it's temporary.  Take the opportunity, you can always move back. You will never know what you will find in yourself and the experiences you will have along the way.  These adventures will make a lasting memory and you will look back and be so glad you did.  You'll always have the what-ifs thoughts but if it's meant to be, it will find it's way back to you.  This adventure has forever changed my path in life and has made me more adventurous. It has a part in the creation of Minnie Box as this is the place where I started.

Can you spot the one thing that hasn't changed?
